I wouldnt say that he's mentally insane. He just reflecting on his life like anyone who was on death row. Surely some of his thoughts about the people around him aren't comlpetely "normal". But insanity isnt one of his many character flaws.
I doubt that Meursault is actually mentally insane. Though his character traits may not necessarily be favorable, he displays fairly normal, uniform behavior throughout the story. As far as his strange behavior in jail, I think any sane person might lose themselves at least a little in that situation. He was confined in a small space with limited contact and nothing to consider but his own murder trial and upcoming execution. Naturally, that was probably upsetting for him, but does not imply insanity.
I won't go as far to say that Meursault is mentally insane, it seems that he has just an extremely different personality. I think anyone put in that position of awaiting the jail sentence would have to act at least a little bizarre. Meursault just seems to take life much different than anyone else by displaying strange behavior, but we cannot assume that he is insane.
I feel that Meursault is not going mentally insane even though many strange qualities arise throughout the book. While he is in prison his same basic outlook on life still implies, he still only agrees to marriage with Marie if she wants to and he still complains about a lot of things. He does seem to snap when he is talking to the priest but that is expected because he is in jail and on death row and he knows that his life is completely over. Any sane person put into his situation can be distorted to seem insane.
Although Meursault has a different outlook on life, he is definitely not insane. Meursault does display some personality traits that most might see as disturbing and crazy, but that is just because of the mindset that we learned. He might not have been upset when his mother died or cared much that he killed a man for no true reason and his now sentenced to death for it, but that is the way he chose to live his life. Aside from his twisted views, Meursault was perfectly sane.
Create a NEW POST. This post should be a question or quote about The Stranger for which you would like to hear other people's ideas. If you use a quote, you should have a question or idea that accompanies it. If someone else posts a very similar question or the same quote before you, you must change your post.
