Meursault's Conclusion

"I was forced to admit, however, that from the moment it had been passed its consequences became as real and as serious as the wall against which i pressed the lenght of my body" (Camus 109-110).

In this quote, Meursault talks about how he finally realizes that his death sentence was in fact real and not a a farce as it had seemed to him prior. Do you think Meursault was a little late in reaching this assumption?

Raymond

Had Meursault not met Raymond, do you think he would have still ended up in the same situtation that he did?

Regret?

"I had lived my life one way and I could have just as well lived it another. I had done this and I hadn't done that. I hadn't done this thing but I had done another. And so? It was if I had waited all this time for this moment and for the first light of this dawn to be vindicated." Do you think that this quote shows that Meursault regrets the way he lived his life? Do you think that by saying these things, he is trying to justify his life to himself? Explain.

Meursault & The Priest

When the priest is talking to Meursault about god all the Meursault does is tell the priest that he doesn't want to hear about god until he says to himself, "He seemed so certain about everything didn't he?". Do you think Muersault is now questioning his existential beliefs on life and thinking about putting faith into a higher power?

Marie

Do you think Marie accepted Meursault's existentialist's attitude or eventually ignored it as Meursault finds he recieves less and less of Marie's letters in jail?

Opinion

Did the book The Stranger intrest you or catch your attention? Why or why not? Did you enjoy reading the book The Stranger? Why or why not?

Meursault & Maman

Why do you think it is that Meursault seems so uninterested by his mother throughout the book? And why does he wait until the very end, before his death, to remember her and appreciate her way of life?

Meursault's Execution

Does anyone get the feeling that Meursault is going to be executed?

Meursault's sanity

Does anyone think that Meursault might be mentally insane? He shows some strange qualities in prison.

Maman, the existential?

"I felt as if i understood why at the end of her life she had taken a 'fiance,' why she had played at beginning again... So close to death even Maman must have felt free then and ready to live it all again." page 122. Would you say that from what Mearsault says about Maman, is she also an existential character?

General Question #1

Is anyone else finding it really difficult to come to grasps with the concept that young people are expected to choose one field/profession, get educated in it, and stick with it for life? I could probably feel equally passionate, and be equally successful, with some other major/field; does that mean that I should not be entering the one I have chosen?
