Raymond

Had Meursault not met Raymond, do you think he would have still ended up in the same situtation that he did?

If Muersault had indeed not met Raymond, he would not have ended up in the situation that he was in. For example, here Camus clearly states, " He wanted to know if it was just by chance that i hadn't intervened when Raymond had beaten up his girlfriend, just by chance that i had acted as a witness at the police station, and again just by chance that my statements on that occasion had proved to be so convenient" (Camus 95). All of these things that happened to him centralized around Raymond and his issues. Raymond had beaten up his girlfriend and wanted Meursault as a witness. Raymond had asked Meursault to cover for him. Raymond had started the conflict with the Arabs. If not for Raymond's temper and crude character, Meursault wouldn't have been involved in the fight that lead to him killing the Arab.

After reading Albert Camus' "The Stranger" I am led to believe that Meursault was bound for a life of distruction. He had a "I don't care" attutide about alot of serious issues. However, i guess that would all have to depend on what people think is serious and not, which is a personal issue. All in all Meursault i felt had that attitude about almost everything. With an attitude like that Raymond had nothing to do with the situation that Meursault was in.

If Muersault had not met Raymond, his path of life would have been extremely different. Raymond changed his life for the better, yet for the worse. Muersault’s life was changed for the better due to the fact that Muersault now had a companion. His life was altered for the worse because Raymond led Muersault to his death. If Raymond had not come into his life, Muersault would not have met the Arab, which would have completely changed Muersault’s life.
